GEORGIA STREET VIADUCTS

TYPE: COMPETITION PROPOSAL

YEAR: 2015

In 2015, Vancouver City Council voted to demolish the Viaducts. These pieces of transportation infrastructure are the only remnants of a planned freeway system that was famously blocked by citizens, making Vancouver the only major city in North America not served by a freeway. But the zones under and around the freeway offer a diversity of public spaces not seen in the manicured green zones endemic to every other park in the city.

Illustration of a modern architectural landscape with a curved bridge, a large spherical structure, and several green grassy areas with water features.
Aerial view of a large park with walking paths, water features, trees, and an amphitheater with tiered seating.
A 3D abstract sculpture resembling a helical staircase with multiple winding layers, constructed from rectangular and curved elements, set against a plain background.

THIS PROPOSAL AIMED TO RETAIN PIECES OF THE VIADUCTS THAT SHELTER SOME OF THE SPACES (LIKE THE SKATEPARK) WHILE CREATING OTHER TYPOLOGIES NOT CURRENTLY PART OF THE CITY’S PUBLIC SPACE INVENTORY.

Spaces that are dank, mysterious, and surprising.
